Job Description

Software Engineer - AI Content Systems

TrueLearn | Fully Remote

About TrueLearn

At TrueLearn, we help medical professionals provide the best possible care for their patients. Our learning science–driven platform supports clinicians at every stage of their careers, from board preparation through continuing education. The work we do touches the people who touch patients — which means every line of code, every model, and every experiment we ship has the potential to ripple outward into better care, better outcomes, and better lives.

We are looking for a software engineer to help build the AI-integrated content system at the center of our next-generation platform. All TrueLearn content is authored, organized, and validated by learning scientists and practicing clinicians. The system we’re building puts AI to work alongside them, generating, reviewing, and improving content under expert supervision. You’ll own meaningful pieces of that system and its integration into the learning platform.

The Role

Early, foundational work on a consolidating platform. We're replacing a landscape that grew up in pieces with a single next-generation system. The decisions made now are the ones everything else will be built on top of.

We are building a deeply intelligent, human-supervised, adaptive learning platform that responds to each learner’s unique needs in real time, empowering them to master their domain. Achieving this visionary goal requires a foundation built on technical excellence and thoughtful engineering, beginning with these essential building blocks:

  • AI-forward, full-stack development. We are building a sophisticated, adaptive engine using TypeScript and Next.js. You’ll be crafting the robust full-stack architecture that supports high-velocity AI integration, translating complex learning science into reliable, scalable software.
  • Editorial workflows as the foundation of intelligence. Our content models aren’t just storage—they are the training ground for our AI. You will design intuitive, structured workflows that allow subject matter experts to collaborate seamlessly with AI, ensuring our system remains both human-supervised and machine-ready.
  • A culture of rapid experimentation. We believe the best path to an adaptive learning future is paved with brave experimentation. You will be encouraged to test new approaches, use AI agents to accelerate velocity, and view failures as essential data points in our journey to build something truly transformative.

You’ll own features from design through production and make technical calls within your area. You’ll work alongside senior engineers who will push on your thinking as much as you push on theirs, and on a team where asking questions is a sign of engagement, not a gap.

How we work. We build with AI coding agents as partners. Our repo has maintained agent context, a doc-gardening skill that keeps it current, MCP tooling, and instrumentation to measure whether any of it is actually helping. We expect you to use agents to the fullest in your own work and to bring what you learn back to the team. When you find a bottleneck in how we work, we'd rather you tell us and help fix it than work around it quietly.

What You'll Do

  • Build AI powered features within our established content management framework using TypeScript, React, and Next.js
  • Design how LLM output is structured, validated, and traced back to its source, so AI-generated content is something experts can trust and audit
  • Implement multi-step editorial workflows that streamline collaboration among a wide and diverse group of experts and alongside AI agents; versions, assignments, revisions, audit trails, etc
  • Design and implement role-based permissions across collections, so the right experts can do the right things without a support ticket
  • Implement and extend WYSIWYG editing capabilities to support manual and automated edits, lineage, and history
  • Write and review db migrations, and reason about how schema changes land in a system people are actively using
  • Build and maintain integrations with TrueLearn products, platforms, and AI services.
  • Work directly with cross-functional team members. See first-hand the impact of your work
  • Investigate ambiguous problems and communicate what you find. The most impactful work starts with curiosity
  • Notice what's slowing the team down and do something about it. Flaky test, undocumented setup step, a review cycle that keeps stalling. The fix is welcome even when nobody asks
  • Write tests, review PRs, and prepare design proposals. Ask the naive question that turns out to be the right one

What We're Looking For

  • 4+ years of professional experience building and shipping web applications, with production experience in TypeScript and React. You've worked on software real users depended on, and you can walk us through what you built and why. (Own the Outcome.)
  • Engineering discipline that doesn't loosen when the work speeds up. AI tools let you produce more code than you can carefully reason about, which makes judgment the scarce resource rather than output. We're looking for someone who tests what they build, reads what they merge, and can explain every line they ship regardless of who or what wrote it. Rigor is what keeps velocity from turning into rework. (Lead with Evidence.)
  • The judgment to work inside systems you didn't build. You should be able to read unfamiliar code and understand why it's shaped that way, and know the difference between customizing a framework and fighting its design — including when the answer is that a request isn't worth what it would cost. (Make It Count.)
  • Fluency across the stack. You know the vocabulary, from TypeScript and React to relational databases, and you can navigate the seam between application logic and

AI-driven features. You’ve designed real features and can reason about constraints, data integrity, and the downstream implications of your code as you write it.

  • AI Coding Fluency. You've used coding agents on real work, not just demos. You understand that output quality depends on what the agent knows, so you think about prompting, model context, and how the harness is set up, and you can tell when an agent is confidently wrong. (Lead with Evidence.)
  • A steep growth curve and the drive behind it. We care more about trajectory than credentials. Tell us about something you taught yourself because the work demanded it, a problem you stayed with longer than was comfortable, or a skill you have now that you didn't a year ago. We're hiring for who you'll be in two years as much as who you are today. (Always Learning.)
  • A real interest in the users and the mission. Our editors, medical experts, and learners depend on this system every day. The best engineers here get curious about how they work, care about the experience, and notice friction others have accepted as normal. You don't need a healthcare background, but you should care that this work matters. (Help Others Succeed.)
  • Strong written and verbal communication. On a remote team, writing is the primary currency for building trust. You take ownership of clarity — in PR descriptions, proposals, and updates — and you can facilitate a cross-functional conversation where everyone leaves aligned, regardless of technical background.
  • Experience shipping AI features to production. You’ve built product features on top of LLMs that real users depend on, not just prototypes. You’ve dealt with non-determinism, structured outputs, prompt and context design, latency and cost, and the question of how you actually know it’s working. (Lead with Evidence.)

Nice to Have

None of these are required. Any of them will get our attention.

  • Building LLM evals, or observability tooling for AI features.
  • Building MCP servers or agent tooling
  • Direct experience with a headless CMS (such as Payload, Sanity, Strapi, Contentful, or Directus).
  • Experience with Lexical, ProseMirror, Slate, TipTap, or another rich text editor framework — especially building custom nodes.
  • Postgres experience, and comfort with migrations in a deployed environment.
  • Experience with editorial or publishing workflows — drafts, versioning, approval states, audit history.
  • Experience with Docker, AWS (ECS, S3), or CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with feature flags and incremental rollout.
  • Accessibility experience, or a track record of caring about it.
  • Exposure to healthcare, medical education, edtech, or other domains where accuracy carries real stakes.

Compensation and Benefits

The base salary range for this role is $120,000–$135,000, plus a 10% annual target bonus. Where an individual offer lands within that range depends on geographic location, relevant experience, and overall fit for the role.

We offer a competitive benefits package, including:

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Unlimited paid time off
  • Paid holidays and parental leave
  • Fully remote work with computer and peripherals provided
  • Professional development support
  • Life and disability insurance

Why This Role

The content pipeline is the constraint on our business. We’re rebuilding that pipeline around an established CMS framework while integrating AI-assisted generation into the editorial workflow. You’d be helping write our playbook for this transition.

You’ll join early enough to shape the platform. While the core is in production, most future functionality—including integrated AI features—has yet to be built. This role evolves toward the center of our core platform and AI strategy.

You'll do it with a team that wants to work the way good teams should work: with trust, candor, rigor, humor, and with each other. If that sounds like the kind of work you want to do, we'd love to talk.

Pay: $100,000.00 - $122,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • 401(k)
  • Dental insurance
  • Flexible schedule
  • Flexible spending account

About This Role

AI Software Engineers build the applications and systems that AI models run inside. They own the API layers, data pipelines, frontend integrations, and infrastructure that turn a model into a product users interact with. Every AI company needs engineers who can build the software around the AI.

The challenge is building reliable systems around inherently unreliable components. Models are probabilistic. They'll give different answers to the same question. They hallucinate. They're slow. They're expensive. Your job is to build an application layer that handles all of this gracefully while delivering a product that users trust and enjoy.

Across the 9,079 AI roles we're tracking, AI Software Engineer positions make up 5% of the market. At TrueLearn, this role fits into their broader AI and engineering organization.

AI Software Engineer roles are among the most numerous in the AI job market. Every company deploying AI needs software engineers who understand AI integration patterns. The demand is broad, spanning startups to enterprises, across every industry adopting AI capabilities.

What the Work Looks Like

A typical week includes: building API endpoints that serve model inference with caching and fallback logic, designing the data pipeline that feeds context to a RAG system, implementing streaming responses in the frontend, debugging a race condition in the async inference pipeline, and optimizing database queries for the vector search layer. It's full-stack engineering with AI at the center.

Skills Required

Aws (10% of roles) Docker (4% of roles) Typescript (3% of roles)

Full-stack engineering skills with AI integration experience. Python and TypeScript are the most common requirements. You'll need to understand API design, database architecture, and how to build reliable systems around probabilistic outputs. Experience with streaming, async processing, and caching patterns is increasingly important as real-time AI applications proliferate.

Knowledge of vector databases, embedding APIs, and LLM integration patterns (function calling, structured outputs, retry logic) differentiates AI software engineers from general software engineers. Understanding cost optimization (caching strategies, model routing, batched inference) is valuable since inference costs can dominate application economics.

Strong postings describe the product you'll be building, the AI integration patterns you'll work with, and the scale requirements. Look for companies that have existing AI features and need engineers to improve and expand them, not companies that are 'planning to add AI' someday.

If you're a software engineer, you're already 80% there. Learn the AI integration patterns: RAG, streaming inference, function calling, structured outputs. Build a project that demonstrates you can wrap an AI model in a production-quality application with proper error handling, caching, and user experience. That's the portfolio piece that gets you hired.

What to Expect in Interviews

Technical screens look like standard software engineering interviews with an AI twist. Expect system design questions about building reliable applications around probabilistic models: handling streaming responses, implementing retry logic for API failures, and designing caching strategies for LLM outputs. Coding rounds test standard algorithms plus practical integration patterns like async processing and rate limiting.

When evaluating opportunities: Strong postings describe the product you'll be building, the AI integration patterns you'll work with, and the scale requirements. The AI Job Market Today

The AI job market spans 9,079 open positions across 16 role categories. The largest categories by volume: AI/ML Engineer (6,862), AI Product Manager (453), AI Software Engineer (451). These three account for the majority of open positions, though smaller categories often have higher per-role compensation because of specialized skill requirements.

The seniority mix tells a story about where AI teams are in their maturity. Entry-level roles (106) are outnumbered by mid-level (4,384) and senior (3,343) positions, reflecting that most companies are past the 'build a team from scratch' phase and need experienced engineers who can ship production systems. Leadership roles (Director, VP, C-Level) total 1,246 positions, representing the bottleneck between technical execution and organizational strategy.

Remote work availability sits at 6% of all AI roles (531 positions), with 8,478 requiring on-site or hybrid attendance. The remote share has stabilized after the post-pandemic correction. Senior and specialized roles (Research Scientist, ML Architect) are more likely to be remote-eligible than entry-level positions, partly because experienced hires have more negotiating power and partly because these roles require less hands-on mentorship.

AI compensation is structured in clear tiers. The market median sits at $213,000. Top-quartile roles start at $263,911, and the 90th percentile reaches $318,400. These figures include base salary with disclosed compensation. Total compensation (including equity, bonuses, and sign-on) runs 20-40% higher at companies that offer those components.

Category matters for compensation. AI Safety roles lead at $256,000 median, while Prompt Engineer roles sit at $141,440. The spread between highest and lowest-paying categories reflects the premium on specialized technical skills versus broader analytical roles.
