About the team:

Rubrik secures and accelerates the world’s AI transformation. As AI agents reshape the enterprise, Rubrik’s Enterprise AI Incubation team proves it on Rubrik itself.

We are building a thinking enterprise: applications that don't just record the business but help run it. They learn from our data, act through our own agents, and improve with every decision.

Fully backed by executive leadership, this team drives meaningful, large-scale enterprise transformation.

About the role:

We want senior engineers who have already shipped agents that real people rely on, and who are ready to do it again at higher stakes. You will drop into the real work, redesign it around agents that carry it end to end, and ship it as the new way that part of Rubrik operates. You’ll own your agent systems end to end: understanding the workflow, designing the architecture, writing the code, deploying, and running it in production. Rather than simply querying an API, you engineer robust, production-grade infrastructure around model endpoints, integrating custom tooling, context pipelines, automated evaluations, and defensive guardrails to ensure resilience against unstructured real-world data.

You also decide whether a problem needs an agent, a simpler automation, or nothing at all, and you have explicit authority to stop or re-scope work that won’t deliver impact. You thrive in ambiguous environments with a low-ego mindset, leveraging AI coding tools as core collaborative partners in your engineering workflow.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead product discovery alongside Product Managers and domain experts to understand real workflows, map them out, and define clear problems, baselines, and success criteria as the foundation for building agentic solutions.
  • Design, build, test, and deploy production agents, automations, and internal tools using coding agents, LLM APIs, and agent frameworks, integrated with Rubrik’s internal agent platform and business systems.
  • Turn complex processes into multi-agent workflows that carry real work and make decisions: orchestrators that qualify and routes deals, workers that move orders through approval and fulfillment under business rules, agents that monitor signals and recommend actions for customer health, or coordinated agents that handle hire-to-retire steps across HR, IT, and managers with shared state and clear handoffs.
  • Engineer agents for autonomy with reliability, including tool and orchestration flows, context management, caching, retries, and failure handling.
  • Leverage full-stack engineering across backend services, APIs, data models, interactive screens, approval UIs, and chat interfaces as the complete medium to deliver high-ownership, user-facing agent systems.
  • Apply solid software engineering practices to AI systems, treating prompts, skills, configs, and specs as versioned artifacts, with code review, tests, CI or CD, and staged rollouts.
  • Implement evaluation, guardrails, and quality control: derive evals from workflow data, establish quality gates and guardrails, integrate human-in-the-loop approvals where needed, and monitor production runs to refine agents over time.
  • Use measured results to decide how to evolve or retire agents, and turn successful systems into patterns and libraries that can be reused.

Experience you’ll need:

  • Around 7 or more years of professional software engineering experience in production systems, and around 2 or more years of professional, hands-on experience building AI agents and agent powered production applications with measurable outcomes.
  • Strong full stack engineering background, with a track record of designing, building, and owning services end to end, including backend APIs and integrations, data models, and user facing interfaces such as approval UIs, dashboards, or chat surfaces.
  • A builder mindset: comfortable defining baselines and metrics, reporting results in business terms, working in a fast moving environment, and closing the loop by building, demoing, learning, and building again. If you like seeing improvements in hours saved, errors avoided, and teams unblocked, you will have plenty of chances to measure that here.

Software engineering skills and best practices:

  • System design: break down complex problems, design APIs and data models, reason about latency, throughput, and failure modes, and choose simple, robust architectures.
  • Algorithms, data structures, access control permissions, and data provenance.

Spec driven development: turn vague requirements into clear problem statements, write or refine design docs, and use a Spec Plan Task Code* Converge flow so work is traceable from design to code, including when you use AI coding agents.

  • Execution discipline: use version control, code review, automated tests, CI or CD, staged rollouts and rollbacks, logging, metrics, and tracing, and improve systems based on issues and signals from production.

AI engineering skills and best practices:

  • Build agents in code using LLM APIs, SDKs, and libraries, not just no code or low code tools, and have shipped agentic systems that real users rely on.
  • Design robust agent harnesses and multi agent orchestrations: model tools and resources, manage context and state, and keep runs reliable under real world data and load.
  • Establish continuous evaluation and safety mechanisms: turn production failures into test cases, gate changes on eval suite results, and enforce guardrails across agent workflows.
  • Exercise clear judgment on AI fit: decide when a problem needs an agent versus a simpler automation or no build, and make tradeoffs around model choice, latency and cost, context strategy, and autonomy using data rather than intuition.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge/context graphs: entities and relationships, GraphRAG, hybrid retrieval.
  • Agent frameworks and runtimes: Google ADK, LangGraph, OpenAI style, cloud or container platforms.
  • Backend: Python, FastAPI or similar stacks.
  • Tools integration: MCP, Slack or Teams bots, REST APIs, webhooks.
  • Data systems: Snowflake, Salesforce, graph stores.
  • UX: conversational flows, chat surfaces, guided forms, simple dashboards for agent output.

About This Role

AI/ML Engineers build and deploy machine learning models in production. They work across the full ML lifecycle: data pipelines, model training, evaluation, and serving infrastructure. The role has evolved significantly over the past two years. Where ML Engineers once spent most of their time on model architecture, the job now tilts heavily toward inference optimization, cost management, and integrating LLM capabilities into existing systems. Companies want engineers who can ship production systems, and the experimenter-only role is fading fast.

Day-to-day, you're writing training pipelines, debugging data quality issues, setting up evaluation frameworks, and figuring out why your model performs differently in staging than it did on your dev set. The best ML engineers are obsessive about reproducibility and measurement. They instrument everything. They know that a model is only as good as the data feeding it and the infrastructure serving it.

Across the 9,079 AI roles we're tracking, AI/ML Engineer positions make up 76% of the market. At Rubrik, this role fits into their broader AI and engineering organization.

Demand for AI/ML Engineers has been strong and consistent. Unlike some AI roles that spike with hype cycles, ML engineering is a foundational need. Every company deploying AI models needs people who can keep them running, and the gap between research prototypes and production systems keeps growing.

What the Work Looks Like

A typical week might include: debugging a data pipeline that's silently dropping 3% of training examples, running A/B tests on a new model version, writing documentation for a feature flag system that lets you roll back model deployments, and reviewing a junior engineer's PR for a new evaluation metric. Meetings tend to be cross-functional since ML touches product, engineering, and data teams.

Demand for AI/ML Engineers has been strong and consistent. Unlike some AI roles that spike with hype cycles, ML engineering is a foundational need. Every company deploying AI models needs people who can keep them running, and the gap between research prototypes and production systems keeps growing.

Skills Required

Openai (3% of roles) Python (18% of roles) Salesforce (1% of roles)

Python and PyTorch dominate the requirements. Most roles expect experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and familiarity with ML frameworks like TensorFlow or JAX. RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) has become a top-3 skill requirement as companies integrate LLMs into their products. Docker and Kubernetes show up in about a third of postings, reflecting the production focus of the role.

Beyond the core stack, employers increasingly want experience with experiment tracking tools (MLflow, Weights & Biases), feature stores, and vector databases. Fine-tuning experience is valuable but less common than you'd think from reading Twitter. Most production LLM work is RAG and prompt engineering, not fine-tuning. If you have both, you're in a strong position.

Companies that are serious about AI/ML hiring tend to post specific infrastructure details in the job description: the frameworks they use, their model serving stack, their data pipeline tools. Vague postings that just say 'ML experience required' without specifics are often companies that haven't figured out what they need yet.

Career Path

Common paths into AI/ML Engineer roles include Data Scientist, Software Engineer, Research Engineer.

From here, career progression typically leads toward ML Architect, AI Engineering Manager, Principal ML Engineer.

The fastest path into ML engineering is through software engineering with a self-directed ML education. A CS degree helps, but production engineering skills matter more than academic credentials. Build something that works, deploy it, and measure it. That portfolio project is worth more than a Coursera certificate. For career growth, the fork comes around the senior level: go deep on technical complexity (staff/principal track) or move into managing ML teams.

What to Expect in Interviews

Expect system design questions around ML pipelines: how you'd build a training pipeline for a specific use case, handle data drift, or design A/B testing infrastructure for model deployments. Coding rounds typically involve Python, with emphasis on data manipulation (pandas, numpy) and algorithm implementation. Take-home assignments often ask you to build an end-to-end ML pipeline from raw data to deployed model.

When evaluating opportunities: Companies that are serious about AI/ML hiring tend to post specific infrastructure details in the job description: the frameworks they use, their model serving stack, their data pipeline tools. Vague postings that just say 'ML experience required' without specifics are often companies that haven't figured out what they need yet.

The AI Job Market Today

The AI job market spans 9,079 open positions across 16 role categories. The largest categories by volume: AI/ML Engineer (6,862), AI Product Manager (453), AI Software Engineer (451). These three account for the majority of open positions, though smaller categories often have higher per-role compensation because of specialized skill requirements.

The seniority mix tells a story about where AI teams are in their maturity. Entry-level roles (106) are outnumbered by mid-level (4,384) and senior (3,343) positions, reflecting that most companies are past the 'build a team from scratch' phase and need experienced engineers who can ship production systems. Leadership roles (Director, VP, C-Level) total 1,246 positions, representing the bottleneck between technical execution and organizational strategy.

Remote work availability sits at 6% of all AI roles (531 positions), with 8,478 requiring on-site or hybrid attendance. The remote share has stabilized after the post-pandemic correction. Senior and specialized roles (Research Scientist, ML Architect) are more likely to be remote-eligible than entry-level positions, partly because experienced hires have more negotiating power and partly because these roles require less hands-on mentorship.

AI compensation is structured in clear tiers. The market median sits at $213,000. Top-quartile roles start at $263,911, and the 90th percentile reaches $318,400. These figures include base salary with disclosed compensation. Total compensation (including equity, bonuses, and sign-on) runs 20-40% higher at companies that offer those components.

Category matters for compensation. AI Safety roles lead at $256,000 median, while Prompt Engineer roles sit at $141,440. The spread between highest and lowest-paying categories reflects the premium on specialized technical skills versus broader analytical roles.
