Secure Every Identity, from AI to Human

Identity is the key to unlocking the potential of AI. Okta secures AI by building the trusted, neutral infrastructure that enables organizations to safely embrace this new era. This work requires a relentless drive to solve complex challenges with real-world stakes. We are looking for builders and owners who operate with speed and urgency and execute with excellence.

This is an opportunity to do career-defining work. We're all in on this mission. If you are too, let's talk.

The Senior Software Engineer Opportunity

The team that built Jeeva AI is building Digital Workers, a new suite of autonomous agents for identity operations and security inside Okta. The team works directly with Todd McKinnon, Okta's co-founder and CEO, with the opportunity to bring this product to Okta's 20,000+ customers. You will help shape the product with the ownership and pace of a startup and the resources of a public company.

You will build the harnesses and evaluations that make these workers reliable. They investigate risk, use tools, wait for approvals and complete tasks across enterprise systems. Bring depth in agent execution or model quality and help turn it into working software customers can trust.

About You

Production builder: You have shipped AI software and know what changes when real users depend on it.

Careful evaluator: You investigate failures and use evidence to judge quality.

Strong owner: You follow an improvement through code, evaluation, release and customer use.

What you will be doing

  • Build the agent harness for planning, tool use, memory, context compaction, interruption and recovery during long-running work.
  • Integrate OpenAI and Anthropic model APIs. Select models using measured quality, latency and cost, with clear failure handling.
  • Evaluate existing harnesses and build only the missing pieces. Keep the harness connected to AWS workflow execution and approval state.
  • Keep authorization and sensitive writes behind application policy checks. Require evidence of the resulting state before marking work complete.
  • Build evaluation datasets and replay tests for valid findings, access decisions, app setup and AI agent onboarding.
  • Measure false positives, missed risks, unsafe actions, completion rate and cost. Turn production failures into regression tests.
  • Test prompt injection, stale evidence, conflicting instructions and unsafe tool use. Protect tenant boundaries in retrieval and memory.
  • Improve prompts, retrieval, tools and model routing. Evaluate fine-tuning or other post-training methods when results justify them and data use is approved.

What you will bring to the role

  • Strong Python engineering skills and experience shipping an LLM application that uses tools.
  • Hands-on experience building agent workflows or evaluation systems for tool-using LLM applications. For harness work, relevant experience includes Claude Agent SDK, OpenAI Codex SDK, Strands Agents, LangChain Deep Agents, LangGraph or a custom implementation.
  • Experience integrating model APIs, structured outputs and asynchronous services. Experience with OpenAI or Anthropic is especially relevant.
  • Depth in agent execution or evaluation systems, with working code and failure analysis you can explain.
  • Ability to distinguish a plausible model response from a supported finding or verified action.

Scope by level

Senior: Own an agent capability or evaluation pipeline with measurable improvements.

Our stack

Our core stack is Python FastAPI, AWS Step Functions, Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, PostgreSQL on Amazon RDS and pgvector. OpenAI and Anthropic model APIs are part of the integration plan.

We plan to add an agent harness and a dedicated analytics layer using ClickHouse or BigQuery. The harness choice is open. Experience with equivalent tools also counts.

And extra credit for

  • Open-source contributions, agent observability, security evaluations or synthetic evaluation data.
  • Fine-tuning, preference data, post-training evaluation or model distillation using approved datasets.
  • Identity and security workflows. Foundation-model research experience is optional.

About This Role

AI Software Engineers build the applications and systems that AI models run inside. They own the API layers, data pipelines, frontend integrations, and infrastructure that turn a model into a product users interact with. Every AI company needs engineers who can build the software around the AI.

The challenge is building reliable systems around inherently unreliable components. Models are probabilistic. They'll give different answers to the same question. They hallucinate. They're slow. They're expensive. Your job is to build an application layer that handles all of this gracefully while delivering a product that users trust and enjoy.

Across the 9,079 AI roles we're tracking, AI Software Engineer positions make up 5% of the market. At Okta, this role fits into their broader AI and engineering organization.

AI Software Engineer roles are among the most numerous in the AI job market. Every company deploying AI needs software engineers who understand AI integration patterns. The demand is broad, spanning startups to enterprises, across every industry adopting AI capabilities.

What the Work Looks Like

A typical week includes: building API endpoints that serve model inference with caching and fallback logic, designing the data pipeline that feeds context to a RAG system, implementing streaming responses in the frontend, debugging a race condition in the async inference pipeline, and optimizing database queries for the vector search layer. It's full-stack engineering with AI at the center.

Skills Required

Anthropic (2% of roles) Aws (10% of roles) Bedrock (2% of roles) Claude (5% of roles) Langchain (3% of roles) Openai (3% of roles) Pgvector Python (18% of roles)

Full-stack engineering skills with AI integration experience. Python and TypeScript are the most common requirements. You'll need to understand API design, database architecture, and how to build reliable systems around probabilistic outputs. Experience with streaming, async processing, and caching patterns is increasingly important as real-time AI applications proliferate.

Knowledge of vector databases, embedding APIs, and LLM integration patterns (function calling, structured outputs, retry logic) differentiates AI software engineers from general software engineers. Understanding cost optimization (caching strategies, model routing, batched inference) is valuable since inference costs can dominate application economics.

Strong postings describe the product you'll be building, the AI integration patterns you'll work with, and the scale requirements. Look for companies that have existing AI features and need engineers to improve and expand them, not companies that are 'planning to add AI' someday.

The AI Job Market Today

The AI job market spans 9,079 open positions across 16 role categories. The largest categories by volume: AI/ML Engineer (6,862), AI Product Manager (453), AI Software Engineer (451). These three account for the majority of open positions, though smaller categories often have higher per-role compensation because of specialized skill requirements.

The seniority mix tells a story about where AI teams are in their maturity. Entry-level roles (106) are outnumbered by mid-level (4,384) and senior (3,343) positions, reflecting that most companies are past the 'build a team from scratch' phase and need experienced engineers who can ship production systems. Leadership roles (Director, VP, C-Level) total 1,246 positions, representing the bottleneck between technical execution and organizational strategy.

Remote work availability sits at 6% of all AI roles (531 positions), with 8,478 requiring on-site or hybrid attendance. The remote share has stabilized after the post-pandemic correction. Senior and specialized roles (Research Scientist, ML Architect) are more likely to be remote-eligible than entry-level positions, partly because experienced hires have more negotiating power and partly because these roles require less hands-on mentorship.

AI compensation is structured in clear tiers. The market median sits at $213,000. Top-quartile roles start at $263,911, and the 90th percentile reaches $318,400. These figures include base salary with disclosed compensation. Total compensation (including equity, bonuses, and sign-on) runs 20-40% higher at companies that offer those components.

Category matters for compensation. AI Safety roles lead at $256,000 median, while Prompt Engineer roles sit at $141,440. The spread between highest and lowest-paying categories reflects the premium on specialized technical skills versus broader analytical roles.

The most in-demand skills across all AI postings: Python (1,649 postings), Aws (898 postings), Azure (723 postings), Rag (671 postings), Gcp (536 postings), Pytorch (434 postings), Claude (410 postings), Kubernetes (406 postings). Python dominates, appearing in the vast majority of role descriptions regardless of category. Cloud platform experience (AWS, GCP, Azure) is the second most common requirement.
