You'll ship agentic capabilities on an open, extensible stack, with the craft and care required for enterprise trust, as we bring Work AI to every employee, in every company. About the Role:

The bottleneck in building reliable and useful AI systems isn’t writing code anymore. It’s knowing what good looks like, applying that knowledge and experience from production usage into building rigorous evals, and using those evals to guide continuous product self-improvement loops.

As the Tech Lead Manager of AI Evaluations, you will lead a team of applied AI scientists and engineers and build the evaluation strategy and platform that helps Glean ship delightful and reliable AI experiences. You will make evaluation a continuous part of how we develop and operate models, harnesses, assistants, agents, and other AI products at Glean.

You’ll guide the team in translating emerging AI/ML research into reliable evaluation systems, build scalable, efficient and reusable eval infrastructure and trusted quality signals, and work across R&D, product, and marketing teams to turn evaluation results into better products and customer outcomes.

You will:

  • Own the AI evaluation eng roadmap and technical direction end to end: from defining what success means and building the evaluation platform to integrating results into release and product decisions.
  • Build scalable, reusable evaluation infrastructure for datasets, experiments, graders, trace capture and replay, result analysis, and dashboards. Make evaluations reproducible, versioned, cost-aware, and easy for product and engineering teams to use.
  • Create and maintain representative evaluation sets from expert-curated examples, appropriately governed production signals, synthetic cases, and historical failures. Cover common workflows, edge cases, long-tail requests, adversarial inputs, and important user and domain slices; protect held-out acceptance sets from tuning leakage.
  • Define a balanced quality measurement system for AI products, including correctness, groundedness, retrieval and context relevance, completeness, instruction following, citation quality, user preference, and task success. For agents, evaluate tool selection and arguments, multi-step trajectories, policy compliance, recovery, and final task state, not just the final response.
  • Develop a fit-for-purpose mix of deterministic checks, model-based graders (including LLM-based autograders), and human evaluation. Establish clear rubrics; validate and calibrate automated judges against human judgments; and measure evaluator reliability and limitations so teams can trust and interpret scores.
  • Integrate evaluation into development and operations: fast CI regression checks, broader pre-release suites, model and prompt comparisons, and sampled production evaluation. Build feedback loops from user feedback and production traces into new test cases, and use monitoring, canaries, and experiments to detect regressions and drift.
  • Make quality tradeoffs measurable by connecting evaluation outcomes to latency, reliability, and cost. Help teams diagnose failures by slice and trace, prioritize improvements, and make evidence-based decisions about models, routing, prompts, and system changes.
  • Build and lead a high-performing team of applied AI scientists and engineers; coach and develop team members. Partner closely with product, infrastructure, security, and application teams to align evaluation standards and deliver the highest-impact work.

About you:

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, ML infrastructure, data systems, or a related technical field. Experience must include building and operating production systems.
  • 5+ years of engineering or applied AI team management experience, with a track record of technical leadership, developing engineers and scientists, and delivering cross-functional projects.
  • Hands-on experience designing, building, or operating evaluation systems for LLM/GenAI products, including model-based evaluators or autograders; practical understanding of how to assess model, retrieval/RAG, assistant, or agent behavior.
  • Familiarity with evaluation methods and tradeoffs: curated and production-derived datasets, benchmark creation, deterministic metrics, rubric-based and pairwise judgments, human review, judge validation and calibration, human-model alignment, and statistical analysis of results.
  • Understanding of agent evaluation, including tool calling, multi-turn behavior, trajectory quality, task completion, and recovery from errors; experience with safety testing or red teaming is a plus.
  • Strong coding ability in Python or another production language, with sound engineering fundamentals in testing, APIs, data modeling, and reliable distributed systems.
  • Experience building scalable data and developer platforms, experiment pipelines, or CI/CD integrations; familiarity with cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, data stores, and observability is beneficial.
  • Strong judgment about measurement quality, including dataset representativeness, judge calibration, reproducibility, uncertainty, and the risk of optimizing to a narrow metric.
  • Knowledge of public benchmarks across domains and capabilities is a plus.
  • Product-minded and collaborative: able to translate ambiguous quality goals into clear measures, communicate findings to technical and non-technical audiences, and influence roadmaps across teams.
  • MS/PhD in Computer Science, AI or a related field.

About This Role

AI/ML Engineers build and deploy machine learning models in production. They work across the full ML lifecycle: data pipelines, model training, evaluation, and serving infrastructure. The role has evolved significantly over the past two years. Where ML Engineers once spent most of their time on model architecture, the job now tilts heavily toward inference optimization, cost management, and integrating LLM capabilities into existing systems. Companies want engineers who can ship production systems, and the experimenter-only role is fading fast.

Day-to-day, you're writing training pipelines, debugging data quality issues, setting up evaluation frameworks, and figuring out why your model performs differently in staging than it did on your dev set. The best ML engineers are obsessive about reproducibility and measurement. They instrument everything. They know that a model is only as good as the data feeding it and the infrastructure serving it.

Across the 9,079 AI roles we're tracking, AI/ML Engineer positions make up 76% of the market. At Glean Technologies, this role fits into their broader AI and engineering organization.

Demand for AI/ML Engineers has been strong and consistent. Unlike some AI roles that spike with hype cycles, ML engineering is a foundational need. Every company deploying AI models needs people who can keep them running, and the gap between research prototypes and production systems keeps growing.

What the Work Looks Like

A typical week might include: debugging a data pipeline that's silently dropping 3% of training examples, running A/B tests on a new model version, writing documentation for a feature flag system that lets you roll back model deployments, and reviewing a junior engineer's PR for a new evaluation metric. Meetings tend to be cross-functional since ML touches product, engineering, and data teams.

Demand for AI/ML Engineers has been strong and consistent. Unlike some AI roles that spike with hype cycles, ML engineering is a foundational need. Every company deploying AI models needs people who can keep them running, and the gap between research prototypes and production systems keeps growing.

Skills Required

Kubernetes (4% of roles) Python (18% of roles) Rag (7% of roles)

Python and PyTorch dominate the requirements. Most roles expect experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and familiarity with ML frameworks like TensorFlow or JAX. RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) has become a top-3 skill requirement as companies integrate LLMs into their products. Docker and Kubernetes show up in about a third of postings, reflecting the production focus of the role.

Beyond the core stack, employers increasingly want experience with experiment tracking tools (MLflow, Weights & Biases), feature stores, and vector databases. Fine-tuning experience is valuable but less common than you'd think from reading Twitter. Most production LLM work is RAG and prompt engineering, not fine-tuning. If you have both, you're in a strong position.

Companies that are serious about AI/ML hiring tend to post specific infrastructure details in the job description: the frameworks they use, their model serving stack, their data pipeline tools. Vague postings that just say 'ML experience required' without specifics are often companies that haven't figured out what they need yet.

Career Path

Common paths into AI/ML Engineer roles include Data Scientist, Software Engineer, Research Engineer.

From here, career progression typically leads toward ML Architect, AI Engineering Manager, Principal ML Engineer.

The fastest path into ML engineering is through software engineering with a self-directed ML education. A CS degree helps, but production engineering skills matter more than academic credentials. Build something that works, deploy it, and measure it. That portfolio project is worth more than a Coursera certificate. For career growth, the fork comes around the senior level: go deep on technical complexity (staff/principal track) or move into managing ML teams.

What to Expect in Interviews

Expect system design questions around ML pipelines: how you'd build a training pipeline for a specific use case, handle data drift, or design A/B testing infrastructure for model deployments. Coding rounds typically involve Python, with emphasis on data manipulation (pandas, numpy) and algorithm implementation. Take-home assignments often ask you to build an end-to-end ML pipeline from raw data to deployed model.

When evaluating opportunities: Companies that are serious about AI/ML hiring tend to post specific infrastructure details in the job description: the frameworks they use, their model serving stack, their data pipeline tools. Vague postings that just say 'ML experience required' without specifics are often companies that haven't figured out what they need yet.
