We measured the salary gap between AI-skilled and non-AI postings for the same role across 31 professions and 1,439 jobs with disclosed pay. The median premium is 42%, worth $37,000 a year, but it ranges from 22% to 126% depending on the field.
The Headline Numbers
Methodology
We track AI and adjacent job postings every week and tag each one for AI skill requirements in the title and description. For each profession we compared median pay for postings that require AI skills against postings for the same role that do not. The premium is that gap. This study uses 1,439 2026 postings that disclosed a salary range.
We report medians rather than averages, so a handful of $2M research-lab offers do not distort the figure. Professions with fewer than five salaried postings are left out because the sample is too thin to trust. The numbers refresh every time the site rebuilds, so this page reflects the most recent week of data, dated 2026-06-08.

What the numbers say
The headline most people repeat is that AI skills pay more. That is true, but the average hides the story. The premium ranges from 22% for nurses to 126% for research scientists. Same labor market, same year, and a 5.7x difference in what AI fluency is worth depending on where you sit.
The biggest premiums cluster where AI is the product itself rather than a supporting tool. Research Scientists, prompt engineers, and data scientists top the list because their work builds and ships AI systems. The smaller premiums sit in licensed, hands-on fields like nursing and pharmacy, where AI speeds the paperwork but the core job still needs a person in the room.
A 42% median raise for adding AI skills is a strong return on a few months of focused learning, and it shows up across 26% of fields at 50% or higher. The catch is that the premium tracks how close your work is to building AI. If you want the high end, the path runs through data, engineering, and research skills. If you are in a field at the lower end, the AI premium is smaller but the displacement risk is also lower, so the move is to use AI to do your existing job faster rather than to retrain into an AI-native role.
FAQ
Across 31 professions, AI skills add a median 42% to salary, worth about $37,000 a year. The premium ranges from 22% to 126% depending on the field, based on 1,439 2026 postings with disclosed pay.
The top three are Research Scientist (126%), Prompt Engineer (124%), and Data Scientist (108%). These roles build and ship AI systems, which is why AI fluency is worth the most there.
The smallest premiums are in licensed, hands-on fields: Nurse (22%), Pharmacist (29%), and Recruiter (35%). AI speeds the documentation, but the core work still needs a person, so the pay gap is smaller.
Median pay for an AI-skilled role is $224,000, against $170,000 for the same role without AI skills. These are medians across 31 professions, so they smooth out the very high research-lab offers.
